Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a strong irritating odor. Easy to dissolve in water, alcohol, and ether. Formaldehyde is gaseous at room temperature and usually appears in the form of an aqueous solution. Easily soluble in water and ethanol, a 35% to 40% aqueous solution of formaldehyde is called formalin.

The presence of carbonyl oxygen atoms and α— Hydrogen atoms have active chemical properties and can react with many compounds to generate many important industrial chemicals and chemical intermediates.

Main applications:

1.Wood industry: used to produce urea formaldehyde resin and phenolic resin. Formaldehyde and urea are mixed in a certain molar ratio to form urea formaldehyde resin. Phenolic resin is produced by reacting formaldehyde and phenol in a certain molar ratio. Formaldehyde, which is irreplaceable in the wood processing industry, is being replaced by MDI adhesive.

2. Textile industry: The use of formaldehyde is involved in the resin finishing process of clothing. In the production of clothing fabrics, in order to achieve anti wrinkle, anti shrinkage, flame retardant and other effects, or to maintain the durability of printing and dyeing, or to improve hand feel, formaldehyde needs to be added to additives.

3. Anti corrosion solution: Formaldehyde is a substance released by the decomposition of formaldehyde sodium bisulfite at temperatures above 60 ℃. It is colorless, has a stimulating odor, and is easily soluble in water. A 35% to 40% formaldehyde aqueous solution, commonly known as formalin, has anti-corrosion and bactericidal properties and can be used to soak biological specimens, disinfect seeds, etc. However, due to the denaturation of proteins, the specimens are prone to becoming brittle.
